405 [PGBSC Blog] Edmonton sign up part 2

Hi all.

One more piece of information to pass on to everyone today regarding the Edmonton meet.

This is a good meet for those in Elite and Y/N to attend.  As it is a good tune up meet leading up to AA, Provincial and Western Championships in February and March.

The Williams Lake Invitational March 9-10 is a nice meet to attend just prior to the Spring Break for those in the D1, J/S Dev, D2AB and D2C groups.  It is also the last short course swim meet before the long course season begins in April.

Any questions, let me know.

404 [PGBSC Blog] 400/800 Freestyle time trial

Hello everyone,

Christmas is just around the corner and so is the 400/800 Freestyle time trial for D2AB/D1, Elite and Y/N groups.  If your child is participating, please ensure you have signed up to volunteer or have made arrangements for someone to volunteer on your behalf.  If you do not volunteer, your child cannot swim.  If you are new to the Barracuda’s and have not volunteered before or do not know how to time, you will be provided with instructions at the officials meeting on Saturday morning, or you can e-mail me and I will be available to meet at the pool on Thursday Dec 20th from 7 pm to 7:30 pm and Friday Dec 21 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.    There will also be a timing course in the New Year, so watch the blog and bulletin board for sign up notices.  A reminder to all officials,  please bring your Deck Evaluation card with you on Saturday and get it signed off by the Referee, Larry Chrobot.

One last item, please wear a white shirt.  If you have a Barracuda white T-shirt from the November meet bring it with you and return it to me at the end of the time trial.

Looking forward to seeing everyone bright and early on Saturday morning.

The PGBSC Executive wishes to inform its members and parents that due to the Club's current budget deficit, there will be changes in meet fees and swimmer subsidies in 2013. 380 [PGBSC Blog] Fw: a little information about underwater kicking

Dr. Allan Wrigley has shared some thoughts about underwater kicking. He believes that we need to re-think the premise behind underwater kicking off the wall. Pushing off the wall is faster than kicking. The first thing to do then is glide after the push. You won't get any faster than the initial push off the wall, hence the reason for a proper pushing position and excellent streamlining. The underlying premise or reason for doing the kick is to maintain the speed of the push-off. The kick does not increase your speed, it keeps you from slowing down as much than by not kicking. When you start to kick you break streamline and create resistance, beginning the process of slowing down. Therefore it is better to kick later in the glide off than wall than to begin kicking right away.

Dolphin or fish kicking should be used as it creates less drag than flutter kick. You lose less speed. As well, under certain circumstances kicking on your side (fish kick) has been shown to be faster than kicking on your stomach. Here, Allan cites a French study (Why have swimmers neglected the "fish kick" technique?Collard, Luc; Auvray, Emmanuel; Bellaunay, Ivan, International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport Nov2008, Vol. 8 Issue 3, p18) they did with their backstroke and butterfly specialists. Over 15m and at no deeper than 1m below the surface, the swimmers were significantly faster kicking on their side than on their stomach, despite the lack of training in this technique. Make sure that you kick only on your side or on your stomach not while you are transitioning from side to front or back.

Speed of kicking is paramount. First, reduce drag by having a smaller kick. The kick should remain the same size. Kicking speed can be measured through kick rate. Rein Haljund, the Estonian stroke specialist looks for a rate of 75 double kicks per minute. You can measure from the top of one kick through 2 complete kicks. This is an area where we can see a large improvement. Swimmers are often doing dolphin kick off the wall but the rate is not high enough.

Dr. Wrigley also suggests that on the downbeat of the kick don't bend your knees till later and push the water back with the feet, not down. An analogy would be a soccer kick. He also believes we need to increase the amount of kicking in the streamline position. We should decrease the amount of board kick and use smaller boards when we do.

379 [PGBSC Blog] Fw: Megan Wright Barracuda Hoodie and T-Shirt - LOST

As discussed at the pool last night, this is a reminder email to you.  Megan's  Barracuda Hoodie was misplaced on Saturday while at the swim meet. Her name " MEGZZ" is on the sleeve.  Also, on Sunday, her orange T-shirt was taken and I assume that it was mistaken for another as a youth small was left back in the location of where hers was placed.  Megan has taken pride in these Barracuda possessions and I am asking if you could post a notice out to the parents and members of the Barracuda's and other swim clubs involved in the meet.  We are willing to pay the shipping costs.

Thank you,

362 [PGBSC Blog] PLEASE READ - Medical Northern Sprint Meet - Nov 16-18, 2012

Hello,

As many of you are aware our Medical Northern Swim Meet is fast approaching!  The dates of the Meet are November 16-18th.  In order for this meet to be successful we require many volunteers.  It takes about 75 people each day of the meet.  We need people in the following areas:

1.    Timers – this is where we need the most people and if you have never done this before you will be matched up with someone who is experienced in timing.  You will be shown how to run the plunger which is the backup time for the electronic pads that are at the end of each lane.- 40+ timers needed

2.    Referees, Starters, Stroke and Turn Judges, Chief Timer,– training is required for these positions – if you are trained for these positions please indicate this when you sign up. – 16-20 people needed

3.    Electronics – You spend your time up in the electronics room or on the scaffolding in the shallow end.  The times from the electronic pads are transferred into a computer and you make sure the times come in correctly - 6 people needed

4.    Meet Manager Program –  once the times from the electronics are verified it is then transferred to the meet manager program.  From here the times are confirmed and eventually sent out to where it can be viewed online.  - 2 people needed and is covered.

5.    Food:  every volunteer is supplied with food during the meet.  We need about 6 people per day to help out with this.  We need 2-3  more people to help out with this.

If you have not been able to write your name on the volunteer list posted on the Barracuda’s bulletin board at the pool; there is still time!  When you do sign up please mark beside your name what you would like to do.  For example, if you would like to learn the electronics please write “electronics” somewhere beside your name.

I understand that we all have busy lives and may not be able to volunteer during that weekend.  If this is the case, please contact Christine Reid (officials@pgbsc.org ) or Jerzy ( jerzy@pgbsc.org ).  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!   If this is not communicated properly your child(ren) may be pulled from the meet.  We have 110 families in the club this year so we should easily be able to fill the spots needed in order to run the meet.  Every year it is hard to get volunteers for our meets or even time trials, so a few years ago it was made a requirement to volunteer; otherwise your child would be removed from the meet or time trial.   We don’t want this to happen so please make sure Christine, or Jerzy are made aware if you are unable to volunteer.  You can also have someone come in your place if that is an option.

Thank you for your time,

Niki Korolek

358 [PGBSC Blog] Website and registration system

Just an update on the website and registration system. The time on the east cost when our service provider said the system was to be down, has long past. Yet our system is still up. However I have not gotten notice from them that, all is well, so there is still a possibility it could go down.

So please, if you are paying your swim meet fees by credit card as you normally would, please do so in your online account. Should the website go down we have a manual payment processor for credit cards as well. Please see our Registrar, Carolyn Chrobot at registrar@pgbsc.org if you need to make a manual credit card payment. As always there is still the cheque and cash option as well.

357 [PGBSC Blog] Credit card payments for nov swim meet.

Further to my previous blog post about the website downtime. At the time of this blog post the website is still up. Therefore if you are thinking of paying for the swim meet with a credit card, please do so soon, while the website is still up.

We have no control, when the website will go down, if it goes down at all. Therefore the sooner you pay your fees the increased chance you can use your credit card to pay your fees.

356 [PGBSC Blog] PGBSC Website and online registration.

I have been informed by our service provider for the website and online registration system, that due to the storm on the east cost, the primary data centers have experienced damage. This has cause a problem with maintaining service. Therefore I wish to inform you that our service to the website and online registration system may be affect during the next few weeks

I also want to assure you that their backup data centers has taken over, however the capacity of these centers is limited. Rest assure our data and your data is safe and has not been compromised.

What does this mean to you. Well for the upcoming swim meet, the credit card processing may not be available. Of course we will still accept cheques and cash as payment. I am discussing with the club Registrar as to options we may have, and will inform you once we have those options. In addition information normally distributed through the website may not be available through that media. We will tackle that problem as it comes up.

For now please use the system as normal, however please be aware that there may be some disruption in the next few weeks.

355 [PGBSC Blog] Festival of the Trees Coatcheck Fundraiser

FESTIVAL of TREES

NOV 24 – DEC 2, 2012

PGBSC in partnership with The Spirit of the North Foundation runs the coat check during the annual Festival of Trees event at the Civic Centre.

The total amount of donations collected at the coat check is then divided, by the total number of shifts, between all those who participate in the coat check.  It then will be applied into a FRL credit on your membership account.  All participants will also receive free admission to the Festival.

This is a great fundraiser for both parents and swimmers, as they can also work the coat check with you and receive a free admission.

The sign-up sheet for the Festival of Trees is being posted on the bulletin board today at the pool. Deadline to sign-up is Nov 19th. The 2012 Festival of Trees poster is also on bulletin board and the PGBSC Fundraising Page at http://www.pgbsc.org/fundraising/ so you can see the events that will be going on during the various schedule times. Please include your contact number and email address.

When you are signing up, DO NOT alter or edit the shift schedule times or remove or another participants name.

All participants will be contacted by email after Nov 19th with the event details.

I am also looking for a volunteer to help coordinatate this fundraising event.  If you are interested in assisting please email me at cathie.fundraising@pgbsc.org .

We also have some very generous club members who donated or obtained items for the auction, they are:  The Chrobot, Ozcan, Connon, Lamb, and Bourbeau Families.

349 [PGBSC Blog] Timing and Stroke &Turn course

Hi Everyone

I have posted a sign up sheet on the Barracuda's bulletin board for another timing course on Wednesday, November 7th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.

I am also organizing a stroke and turn course for Saturday, November 10th from 9:00 – 11:00 am. This is a good way for parents to learn about the sport of swimming and meet new friends.

It is also necessary for parents to take these courses, so that we can continue to have qualified officials to run our meets.

347 [PGBSC Blog] Medical Northern Sprint Swim Meet

The Volunteer sign-up sheet is now posted on the Barracuda's bulletin board for the Medical Northern Sprint Meet. As you are aware in order for your swimmer to participate in this swim meet we need the commitment of a parent to volunteer for a minimum of 2 sessions. There is also a cut off date of November 13th to sign up, after this date the swimmer will be scratched from the meet. This is as much a fun meet for the swimmer as well as the parent. As a volunteer you will get fed and have the best seat in the house to watch your swimmer.

I will be holding more timing courses in November, so keep an eye on the bulletin board.

If you have any questions regarding volunteering please contact Jerzy or myself only.

See you at the pool....
